Each year The Washington Informer and Washington Informer Charities plan and host an event related to the Arts and Culture of the African American Community out in the community that is a day of interaction and remembrance of the African American heritage. 

This year, we are partnering with Visit Montgomery MD to celebrate Heritage Days in Montgomery County MD- There will be check in and a kickoff program at Allen Chapel AME Church in SE DC and then three buses will depart for Montgomery County.

Each of the buses will be visiting The Button Farm, The Boyd Negro School, Josiah Henson Museum & Park and taking a bus tour of the Rockville area.  Everyone will eat lunch together at the pavilion at Glen Echo Park with the buses staggering their arrival and exits.

Boyds Negro School

19510 White Ground Road, Boyds, MD 20841

This one-room schoolhouse has been renovated and restored to its appearance in 1900. The 22’x30’ wooden structure was the only public school for African Americans in the Boyds area from 1895-1936. Owned and operated by Boyds Historical Society. http://www.boydshistory.org/ 

Button Farm Living History Center

16820 Black Rock Road, Germantown, MD 20874

A living history center depicting plantation life of the enslaved in the 1850s and the story of the Underground Railroad. Reconstruction-era barn, historic outbuildings, heirloom garden, heritage breed farm animals, and slave cemetery. Work continues to restore and maintain the historic buildings and preserve the cultural landscape as a resource for education, preservation, and heritage. Home to the Menare Foundation.

Glen Echo Park

7300 Macarthur Boulevard Northwest, Glen Echo, MD 20812

Glen Echo Park is a lively visual and performing arts site dating back to 1891.  Initially home to a Chautauqua program dedicated to providing the “masses” with opportunities for education and recreation, by 1900 the site had become a popular amusement park, in operation until 1968.  Part of the National Park Service since 1971, Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, Inc. oversees art, history, and recreation programs in a unique setting.

Josiah Henson Park

11420 Old Georgetown Road, North Bethesda, MD 20852

Site of the historic Riley Farm where Rev. Josiah Henson lived and worked as an enslaved person from 1795 to 1830.  Rev. Henson’s autobiography inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s landmark novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin.  A wood frame, two-story house dates to 1800-1815 with an 1850 log wing; both portions were remodeled in 1936.  A Montgomery Parks site and part of the National Park Service National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

Bus Tour of Rockville

Since Rockville’s foundation, African Americans have figured prominently in the history of this city, the seat of Montgomery County. From the earliest tobacco plantations, farmed by hundreds of able-bodied African men, women, and children to today’s multicultural suburban families, African American citizens are part of the continuing growth and success of the Rockville community.
